HER STYLE: THE URBANIST

Fashion

08 August 2016

Think tactile fabrics, casual tailoring, soft layered styling and a neutral colour palette. The urbanist trend is about celebrating the beauty in a simple detail and while the style isn't loud, the look is comfortable and modern. Here's how to pull off the urbanist trend ahead of spring:

ALL OF THE GREYS

From soft and smokey to blackened charcoal, grey is key to this look.

While admittedly grey is not the only colour you could wear, it is definitive of the trend.  Wear layered pieces that work tonally with each other.  For instance, a light grey turtleneck worn beneath a dark grey coatigan.

CHECKS PLEASE

Simple geometric prints and checks are in.

The check in question is crisp and grid-like which sharpens the overall look and stops it from feeling too comfortable. The beauty of a simple black and white check is that it works with nearly every other colour in your wardrobe that is, if you want to change styles later.

CROPPED AND SLEEVELESS

Think cropped pants and sleeveless jackets.

Playing with sleeve lengths and hemlines is what gives this otherwise simple look added depth and interest.  The quintessential urbanist outfit, is a sleeveless longline jacket worn open over a crisp shirt and cropped black pants.  Finish the look with a pair of patent brogues and tote.

KNITTED DETAILS

Chunky knits and textural fabrics add a luxe look and feel.

Wear a chunky knit coat or longline cardigan over a ribbed maxi skirt and white sneakers for a smart yet comfy vibe.  Heading into spring create a less-heavy look with the addition of textural accessories like a tassel snood and tote bag.
