BOOKS YOUR KIDS CAN DIG INTO FOR SUMMER | NORTHLANDS

Reading is one of my favourite hobbies. It’s a hobby I share with my parents. Every once in a while I still get a box of my Dad’s hardback books in the mail – everything from Harry Potter to Nelson DeMille. Cute, right?

When I was a kid, I would love holidays where I could stack up the books, hang out under our huge tree in the front yard (so Mum didn’t have to yell too loudly for me!), and dive into other worlds.

I adore the smell and feel of books. And outdoor reading is such an indulgence. The first thing I do when I’m in a new place is find the BEST spot to escape into the pages of the 4 or 5 books I usually read at a time.

This summer, why not encourage your kids to find their secret spot to disconnect, unwind and dig into something exciting and new? Here are some recommendations from Whitcoulls for your book worms with a 5 – 12 year reading level.

Firstly, for your 5 – 8 year olds:

Books for 5-8 year olds

The Bad Guys #10: The Baddest Day Ever by Aaron Blabey
All hail Crown Prince Marmalade! Surrender to his evil magnificence! Kneel before his butt-handed glory! Or . . . Like . . . DONT! The BAD GUYS and even BADDER GIRLS might have been knocked down, but does that mean theyll stay down? NO WAY!

Sophie Mouse #15: The Missing Tooth Fairy by Poppy Green & Jennifer A. Bell
Sophie gets a visit from the tooth fairy-or does she?-in this fifteenth charming book of The Adventures of Sophie Mouse series!

Dog Man #08: Fetch 22 by Dav Pilkey

And for the 8 – 12 year olds:

Books for 8-12 year olds

Guts by Raina Telgemeier
Raina wakes up one night with a terrible upset stomach. Her mom has one, too, so it’s probably just a bug. Raina eventually returns to school, where she’s dealing with the usual highs and lows but it becomes clear that Raina’s tummy trouble isn’t going away…

A Tale of Magic by Chris Colfer
When Brystal Evergreen stumbles across a secret section of the library, she discovers a book that introduces her to a world beyond her imagination and learns the impossible: She is a fairy capable of magic!

The Beast of Buckingham Palace by David Wailliams & Tony Ross
The young Prince Alfred has never known a life outside Buckingham Palace – but when strange goings-on breach its walls and stalk the corridors in the dead of night, he is thrust into a world of mystery, adventure and monsters.

So pop into Whitcoulls (find them here) at Northlands and grab one or two (or all!) of these books. And don’t forget to treat yourself – that way EVERYONE gets to escape. Even if it’s only for an hour or two. You deserve it!
